Almanaque — Design Gráfico Português em Revista

We are introduced to the history of graphic design, illustration and printing in Portugal by means of a huge collection of magazines.

Continuing a programme that focuses especially on Portuguese design, Casa do Design in Matosinhos hosts the exhibition Almanaque – Design Gráfico Português em Revista [Portuguese Graphic Design in Magazines]. This exhibition, curated by José Bártolo, brings together a wide range of magazines through which we are introduced to the history of graphic design, illustration and printing in Portugal. We can find the hallmarks of a time reflected in the magazines: styles, fashions, currents, ideas and authors. A history of design cannot be dissociated from a cultural history - a history of technical means and artistic currents, of the political and economic contexts - which magazines, in their freedom or restricted by censorship, whether promoting progressive or established values, end up mirroring. This exhibition, made up of magazines from the José Bártolo's collection, presents us with about 150 years of graphic design in Portugal, from different points of view. It enables us to have a panoramic view of the history of ideas, the aesthetic currents of technological change, but also provides detailed observation and author analysis. José Bartolo is a curator, teacher and design critic based in Porto. He has worked as an independent curator since 1998. He was the commissioner of Portugal Pavilion in the 21st Milan Triennale (2015) and curator of the Duets exhibition at the Beijing World Art Museum (2014). In 2015 he was invited by the Government of Portugal to be the curator of the exhibition to commemorate the 40 years of the 25th April revolution. He curated numerous exhibitions and he regularly publishes on design.
